Tuesday, 25 Oct 2011 at 7PM we will be having Adam's Eagle Scout Court of Honor at the First Baptist Church Family Activities Center (across Grundy Street from the main church building).  Scouts should arrive 30 mins early to rehearse their parts in this important program.

Troop 158 is going on a backpacking trip on Oct 29th and 30th.  If you are planning to go, please be at the scout room, packed and ready to go, at 7 AM Sat Morning.  We should be back by 3 or 4 pm Sunday afternoon. The trip length will be about 7,5  miles each day. Right now, the forecast is for a high of 55 and a low of freezing. We will go unless the forecast is terrible, terrible.

We will hike the Collins East and Collins West trails which I don’t think the troop has done before.  It is a interesting area, with caves, waterfalls in caves, a river that disappears and then reappears, and has lots of rocks, bluffs,  and boulders.  On this map, http://www.friendsofscsra.org/downloads/savage-gulf-trail-map-2008-september.pdf   it is the pair on the southern end of the Savage Gulf area. We will camp at the StageCoach campsite, after climbing back up and out of the Gulf.

For those working on second class, you can pitch a tent, navigate on 5 mile hike, Cooking, fire building, stove ops, etc.

For those working on first class – nav without compass, cook for the whole patrol, cleanup, etc.

For those working on the Backpacking Merit badge, look over the worksheets.  You should be able to accomplish the Cooking, leave no trace, description of how to keep clean and sanitary, navigation with map and GPS, and bear bag rigging.  I will have a high-quality map, and GPS.

It will be cold, so bring clothes for cold weather ( but not too many), sleeping cap, good sleeping bag, and good boots.  Consult your scout handbook for a checklist.  If you need help with deciding what to bring, give me a call.

The boys will be bringing and cooking ALL their own food. They need to confer and conspire on what food, pots, stoves, water filters and tents to bring and share.  Get on the phone and plan this out.

What NOT to bring – cotton clothes, and  electronic toys.
